Why Core Values are Essential for Your Success and How to Define Them
So you are thinking about starting a business or you already have one up and running. This is amazing, welcome to the amazing world of entrepreneurship. It is a beautiful and crazy ride but that is a story for another day. Today, we are talking about core values and why we need them.
Core values are our compass and guiding light to our business. It is what we go back to in times of struggle, challenge, growth, and change. We typically will never change our core values when it comes to our business. They help guide us to decisions, action plans, and training. If something is presented to us and it feels uncomfortable or we are not sure, that is when these values become even more important.
I am here to tell you, that if you think you can operate a successful business without core values, you are unfortunately misled. It may work for a little bit, but when a large problem presents itself or you have staff not following your belief systems because they do not know what they are, then that is when we get into trouble.
Typically businesses will choose a list of up to 5 core values to represent their company. This does not matter if you are a team of one or a team of 100, find those core values. Once you have a list of words that best describe how your business will always operate, I think it is important to expand upon why you chose those words so when you do have employees, this can be a part of their training in the company.
There are a lot of free resources out there for finding your core values. It will be a list of words and you can go through as many lists as you need to find the words that best encompass your business. For example, my core values for my company are empathy, trust, and support. No matter where I am on my business journey I will also strive to provide these things to my clients, patients, and team.
If you do not have your core values already for your business, please do them today. I will be your accountability buddy if you need me! Send me an email at info@drarielblackburn.com and we can either go through your list together or you can just tell me what you have so far! I would truly love to know what your core values are and why you chose them for your business.
