My 5 Favorite Supplements for Anxiety

Here are my go-to supplements when patients are looking for more support for their anxiety

I have suffered with anxiety for as long as I can remember. For many years I spent searching for the best supplements that helped with this. My education in Holistic health really helped guide my decisions along with the extreme amount of stress and anxiety experienced in my Doctorate program. I am going to be completely open and honest that along with supplementation, I am also on much-needed medication. Throughout my posts, you will always see I am an advocate for both medications and supplementations, when appropriate.

So let's dive into these tried and true supplements I have personally used as well as recommended to my patients.

Supplement #1 - L-Theanine

L-theanine is a water-soluble amino acid found in green tea and mushrooms. It is also available as an oral dietary supplement and is used for its antioxidant and relaxant effects. It can help you relax by lowering stress and anxiety (strong feelings of worry or fear). It has also been shown to benefit sleeping issues.

Supplement#2 - Magnesium Glycinate

This form is bound to the amino acid glycine, which can enhance absorption and reduce the likelihood of digestive discomfort. It's often used to support relaxation, calmness, and sleep as well. This is a good form of magnesium to take if you have a sensitive stomach. Magnesium is important for women in general, even if you are not experiencing anxiety. Check out my other blog on this!

Supplement #3 - B-Complex

Although each B vitamin is distinct, they work together to support the body. This includes cellular energy production, healthy red blood cell formation, and healthy neurological function. This includes depression, anxiety, and overall mood function. I usually take mine in the morning after breakfast or before lunch. I sometimes have trouble sleeping if I take it too late in the day. I also need food or I get a stomach ache after taking it, so I recommend trying with food first.

Supplement #4 - 5-HTP

"5-HTP increases serotonin levels to promote restful sleep, manage stress, and decrease sugar cravings. It contains pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the active form of vitamin B6 and the necessary cofactor for the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin." Thorne Company

Rescue Remedy is something I have been taking since I was young. I would use this for emergency situations when I was feeling very anxious. They have adult and children's dosages which is wonderful for you and your little one who may be experiencing anxiety.

Don’t Forget!

Don't forget, this information is not intended to replace Therapy (which I LOVE and strongly urge everyone) or medications prescribed by your health care professionals. I love all these products and have used them all personally over the years, but also have an amazing Therapist I work with!
